Icebreaker:  Think back to when you were a kid. What was the most exciting purchase you remember making?

Sermon Discussion – James 5:1-6

  • In the sermon, money is compared to radiation. In your own words, describe why it can be viewed this way. Do you agree or disagree with this characterization? Why or why not?
  • James points out that a desire for wealth values this world over eternity.
    •  How can focusing on material wealth detract from spiritual growth and eternal priorities?
  • In James 5:3-6, mishandling wealth is likened to a “day of slaughter” and described as condemning and murdering righteous people.
    • How do you interpret these metaphors in the context of contemporary society?

Going Deeper

  • The sermon mentions that wealth can lead to callousness over compassion.
    • How have you observed this dynamic in yourself?
    • How can you avoid becoming indifferent to the needs of others because you desire better financial security?
  • Reflect on the parable of the sheep and the goats from Matthew 25:41–46.
    •  How does this passage challenge our understanding of what it means to follow Christ?
  • In what ways can we ensure that our treatment of others regarding money aligns with God’s values over our own or the world’s?
  • Are there specific practices or habits you can adopt personally to cultivate a more generous spirit and a healthier relationship with money?

Prayer Time

Ask God to give you eyes to see how he wants to change your heart and attitude toward wealth. Ask him to help you be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s messages throughout the day.

Reminder for next week:  Read through James 5:7-11
