Icebreaker:

What types of things did you do as a kid to try to convince people you were telling the truth? (i.e., “I cross my heart and hope to die, a thousand needles in my eye”)

Sermon Discussion – James 5:12

  • In modern society, what are some common ways people try to assert their honesty or convince others of their trustworthiness?
    • How does this align with or diverge from the principles outlined in James’ teaching?
  • In your own words, describe the concept of spiritual power at work behind the physical world.

Going Deeper

  • Why do you think people have the natural inclination to want to defend and prove their innocence when faced with false accusations?
  • (Read Mark 15:3-4) Looking at Jesus’ example, how does his response to false accusation challenge your own instincts when faced with unjust criticism or slander?
    • What lessons can you learn from his approach to integrity and humility?
  • The passage tells us that followers of Christ do what they say they are going to do.
    • How can you build a reputation for being trustworthy and reliable without resorting to swearing oaths or making grand promises?
  • What steps can you take to foster a culture of honesty, transparency, and reliability in your interactions with others?

Prayer Time

Spend time in reflection, asking the Spirit to reveal to you where your ‘yes’ meant ‘no’ or vice versa. Pray that God would show us how to give him our reputation and how to live with integrity.

Reminder for next week:  Read through James 5:13-20

MEN, we have the Men’s Breakfast coming up on Saturday, May 4th (8:30-10). Talk about this! Save the date and come together! Register together here!
