Conversation Starter/Questions (10 minutes)

Share a time when someone has assumed they knew what you did either at your job or as part of your day-to-day life – and they were totally wrong?

Sermon Based Questions (15-20 minutes)

Discuss your view of reaching the next generation and why you think it is important? Do you think there is hope for this generation? What are some strengths and weaknesses of this generation that you have witnessed, if any?

Read Philippians 2:12-18 as a group out loud.

Discuss how can we “work out our salvation” and at the same time help those that are new in their salvation grow in theirs (teen or otherwise). V.12

Does your attitude (“grumbling and arguing”) affect your ability to teach people about Christ? V.14

How are you being “blameless and pure” and “shining among them” to this generation? V.15

How can we “hold firmly to the word of God” and still show compassionate love to teens or anyone new to their faith? V.16 also Ephesians 4:32

Share with the group a way you feel like you might be laboring in vain? V.16

Out of the 5 things Billy mentioned about why youth ministry is important for the church to support, which one stuck out to you the most.

    • Youth ministry is vital to helping teens integrating into the larger intergenerational community of the church.
    • Youth Ministry can resist the status quo, helping the church stay up to date in a changing world.
    • Youth ministry focuses on inviting those who are not already part of the church into the deeper narrative of God’s plan for humankind.
    • Youth ministry HELPS the Church focus on the way of Jesus, which goes beyond tradition, dogma and rituals.
    • Youth Ministry reminds the church that teens are not marginalized members of the body, but co-creators and collaborators in the divine work of the church, restoring life on earth as it is in heaven.

Digging Deeper (20-25 minutes)

What can we learn from the parable of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son, in Luke 15? How do these parables instruct us regarding our commitment to reach this next generation which will be lost without us bringing them the gospel?

Challenge and Prayer (10-15 minutes)

Spend some time in prayer for our students as they battle the world in a way that we might not understand?
