Conversation Starter/Questions (10 minutes)
Pastor David talked about the reputation of the Colossian church. What is one thing about Bethany that drew you to start attending?
Sermon Based Questions (15-20 minutes)
Let’s Talk About The Gospel:
The “Gospel” is a pretty common Christian term but has a lot of depth to it. Pastor David shared several key things about the Gospel that we see in Colossians: The gospel is all about Jesus; it is through Him, For Him, and it promises us an eternal hope.
What stood out to you about his description of the Gospel? What was new to you? What impacted you?
How would you define it? (Go back and read verse 15-20 as a reminder)
In the book “What Is The Gospel” you find this statement: “The biblical gospel is like fuel in the furnace of worship. The more you understand about it, believe it, and rely on it the more you adore God both for who he is and for what he has done for us in Christ”.
How does this statement tie together with what we’ve learned in Colossians so far?
Do you find the gospel to be fuel for your worship in life? Why or why not?
How does the Gospel impact how you live for and respond to God?
How do we practically live these things out?
Digging Deeper (20-25 minutes)
Paul spoke of the reputation of this church because of how the Gospel impacted their lives. Let’s ask ourselves a question:
As a follower of Christ, what do you think your reputation is at work, home, or with your friends?
Look back at what the church in Colossae was known for in verses 3-8. What stands out to you. Why?
How would you or others answer finish this sentence about you? “Because of the gospel’s power in my life, people see the evidence of God in me by_________?”
How does living “IN HIM” impact your life and reputation? Share one example and how God brought you to that point in your life.
Let’s look at Paul’s Prayer in Verse 9-10:
What is the difference between knowing about God and knowing God’s will? How does that impact how we live or “walk” for the Lord?
Let’s Get Really Honest.
What is something in your life that you desire to change but have been doing through your power and not God’s Power in your life?
Based on this scripture, what is God asking you to do IN HIM, differently than you have been doing it, to help you walk pleasing to God?
Challenge and Prayer (10-15 minutes)
Our Grow Group
Looking back at the reputation of Colossae and the fruit of walking according to God’s will, how can we as a Grow Group help each other “Walk Worthy of The Lord, Pleasing to God.”
Paul’s prayer is just as much God’s desire for us in his church today as it was then. Take time as a group to make this (Verses 9-14) a prayer for you, your Grow Group, and for Bethany Church.
