Grow Group Questions - October 27, 2024

Announcement:

Have you considered leading or going on a hurricane relief trip? This is an incredible time to help meet the needs of those suffering the effects of these storms, now and over the next year as well.

Icebreaker:
What are some things either in your life or the world in general that were once considered normal or acceptable but are now seen as problematic or harmful (e.g., smoking)?

Sermon Discussion:

  • How does slavery in the ancient world differ from the racial slavery of our recent history (e.g., in Europe and the U.S.)?
  • Do you see any differences in the protections offered to slaves in the Old Testament that were not offered to those in the African slave trade?
    • In what ways can understanding the cultural context of ancient Israel help us interpret these laws more clearly?
  • By seeing God’s protections or regulations regarding slavery in ancient Israel, how do these reflect His concern for human dignity, even within a system we find troubling?

    • In what ways does Jesus' call to be “slaves to Christ” (1 Corinthians 7:22) challenge or reshape your understanding of freedom and submission?

    Going Deeper:

    • How do you personally reconcile difficult passages like Exodus 21:20-21 and Leviticus 25:44-46 with your faith?
  • How do you reconcile the tension between a God who is good and loving, and the existence of suffering or injustice like slavery in the Bible?
    • How does your faith help you process this?
    • How does this connect to our own experiences of suffering where God doesn’t intervene in ways we expect?
    • What does it mean to trust in God's goodness even when we don't have all the answers to why He allows suffering?

    Next Steps:

  • What steps can we take as individuals or as a church to reflect God’s desire for justice and dignity for all people in today’s world?
  • Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
Our offices are closed from December 23 to January 1.
