LEADERS NOTE:

This week, instead of just asking if we think we should value the Bible (to which I think we will all agree). Instead, we have a chance to help each other enter into lifting God’s Word to be an active part of our lives together. Let’s try to focus our discussion on how we can lift it up better in our lives and what can help us do that more.

Conversation Starter/Questions (10 minutes)

  • What is your favorite Bible Translation and why? When did you first use that version?

Sermon Based Questions (15-20 minutes)

Read 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:16-21

Pastor Thad defined the Bible with this quote:

“The Bible is a reliable collection of historical documents written by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses. They report supernatural events that took place in the fulfillment of specific prophecies and claimed that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.

Reflect on that Statement: What stands out to you from it?

  • What do you like about or agree with most strongly? Is there anything you might disagree with in that statement?
  • How do you feel about this being a summary “apologetics” answer to why you have faith in the Bible?
  • What makes the key phrases “eyewitnesses” and “fulfillment of prophecies” so important to understanding why we trust the wholeness of the Bible?

Digging Deeper (20-25 minutes)

Read Hebrews 4:12 and then Bethany’s Value below:

One of our Values is “The Bible ”.  It says “We have the highest regard for God’s inspired word. We stress the importance of opening the Bible and applying the truths that will transform our lives.”

After reading Bethany’s Value on “The Bible”, note the 3 bolded areas. How are we doing as a Grow Group at living out these three things in our times that come together?

  • How does Hebrews 4:12 give us a picture of doing this in our lives and as a group?

Example: We might first open the Bible and study/read “be humble” but don’t do the other bolded items. OR we might open it up, study/read it and agree that we all need to be more humble, and then stop there. Or We open it up and study and read it, realize we need to apply it and then can look at our lives, and others can look and see that we are becoming more humble (“Transform our lives”).

  • What might keep us from doing these things, first in our individual lives and also as a group?
  • How can we help each other first do this in our personal lives and begin to do this better in our group?
    • How might Transformation Groups help us do this better?

Challenge and Prayer (10-15 minutes)

As we have shared what we can do better as a group, come up with 1 thing we can commit to as a group for our personal lives and groups to help us live out the value for the Bible.  – Spend time praying, asking God to help us by the power of the Holy Spirit to do that.
